SVG MCP server for Windsurf

Connect SVG.new to Windsurf and Cascade can turn images into clean SVG vectors, recolor and simplify them, and remove backgrounds inside your project.

Free account includes 3 vectorizations a day.

Add SVG.new to Windsurf

Needs Node.js installed, since Windsurf launches the server with npx.

1

Create an API key

Sign in at svg.new/account and create a key. It starts with svk_ and is shown once.

2

Edit mcp_config.json

Open ~/.codeium/windsurf/mcp_config.json and add the server inside mcpServers:

{
  "mcpServers": {
    "svg-new": {
      "command": "npx",
      "args": ["-y", "@svgnew/mcp"],
      "env": { "SVG_NEW_API_KEY": "svk_your_key_here" }
    }
  }
}
3

Refresh and ask Cascade

Refresh the MCP servers in Cascade so it picks up svg-new, then ask something like “Vectorize assets/logo.png and save it as assets/logo.svg”.

Ten tools are available: vectorize, vectorize_file, recolor_svg, simplify_svg, remove_background, remove_background_file, batch_vectorize, batch_vectorize_files, get_batch_status and list_vectorizations. See the MCP server page for details.

Common questions

How do I add an SVG MCP server to Windsurf?

Create an SVG.new API key, add an svg-new entry that runs npx -y @svgnew/mcp with SVG_NEW_API_KEY set to ~/.codeium/windsurf/mcp_config.json, then refresh the MCP servers in Cascade.

Where is Windsurf’s MCP config file?

Windsurf reads MCP servers from ~/.codeium/windsurf/mcp_config.json. It uses the same mcpServers format as Claude Desktop and Cursor.

Can Windsurf vectorize an image?

Yes, once the SVG.new MCP server is connected. Ask Cascade to vectorize a PNG, JPG or WebP in your project and it calls the vectorize tool, then saves the returned SVG.

What does it cost?

The MCP server is free to install. Vectorizing uses SVG.new credits: a free account includes 3 vectorizations a day, and Pro is $9.99 a month for 1,000. Recolor and simplify are free.
