SVG MCP server for Cursor
Add SVG.new to Cursor's mcp.json and its agent can vectorize images into SVG, recolor and simplify SVGs, and remove backgrounds without leaving the editor.
Free account includes 3 vectorizations a day.
Add SVG.new to Cursor
Needs Node.js installed, since Cursor launches the server with npx.
Create an API key
Sign in at svg.new/account and create a key. It starts with svk_ and is shown once.
Edit Cursor's mcp.json
Open ~/.cursor/mcp.json for all projects, or .cursor/mcp.json in a project root, and add the server with your key:
{
"mcpServers": {
"svg-new": {
"command": "npx",
"args": ["-y", "@svgnew/mcp"],
"env": { "SVG_NEW_API_KEY": "svk_your_key_here" }
}
}
}If the file already has an mcpServers object, add the svg-new entry inside it.
Check the connection
Open Cursor Settings and go to the MCP section. svg-new should be listed with ten tools enabled.
Ask the agent
Vectorize public/logo.png and save it as public/logo.svgCursor may ask you to approve the tool call before it runs.
What Cursor can do with it
Vectorize images
PNG, JPG or WebP to SVG with the vectorize tool. 1 credit each.
Batch convert
Up to 10 images per batch with batch_vectorize, then poll with get_batch_status.
Recolor and simplify
recolor_svg swaps hex colors; simplify_svg cuts the palette to 1 to 256 colors. Both free.
Remove backgrounds
remove_background drops the background from an SVG using the original image. 1 credit.

Common questions
How do I add an SVG MCP server to Cursor?
Create an SVG.new API key, then add an svg-new entry to ~/.cursor/mcp.json (or .cursor/mcp.json in your project) that runs npx -y @svgnew/mcp with SVG_NEW_API_KEY set. Cursor starts the server and lists its ten tools in its MCP settings.
Can I vectorize an image in Cursor?
Yes. Once the SVG.new MCP server is connected, ask Cursor’s agent to vectorize an image in your project. It sends the PNG, JPG or WebP to SVG.new through the vectorize tool and writes the SVG it gets back into your repo.
Where is Cursor’s mcp.json?
Use ~/.cursor/mcp.json to make the server available in every project, or .cursor/mcp.json in a project root to scope it to that project. Both use the same mcpServers format.
What does it cost?
The MCP server is free to install. Vectorizing uses SVG.new credits: a free account includes 3 vectorizations a day, and Pro is $9.99 a month for 1,000. Recolor and simplify are free; vectorize and background removal cost 1 credit.
The server shows an error in Cursor. What should I check?
Make sure Node.js is installed so npx can run, and that SVG_NEW_API_KEY is set in the env block. The server exits on start without a key. Keep source images under roughly 3 MB, since requests are capped at about 4.5 MB of base64.
